What is Code Lavender?
Code Lavender was first described in a Hawaiian hospital several years ago as a way to pause and acknowledge that a stressful or tragic event has occurred, and offer a show of support and acts of kindness to the caregivers who were involved. While the type of interdisciplinary members of the team who respond varies by hospital, most incorporate lavender aromatherapy for the calming influence it is believed to have.
Over the past several years, a Code Lavender program has been formalized in order to support staff at Stony Brook University Hospital. A SBUH Code Lavender can be called anywhere in the hospital via the on-call switchboard or operator; a hospital chaplain often responds real-time, and is able to help orchestrate later follow up with Code Lavender team members (including physicians, social workers, nurses, a psychologist, a psychiatry NP) as needed depending on the particular scenario.

New! Stony Brook Medicine Single Session Support Center
Free, confidential, drop-in mental health support is available for healthcare professionals and trainees at all Stony Brook Medicine hospitals through the Single Session Support (S3) Center. Trained staff provide mental health support in the form of single-session interventions (SSIs) — programs that are intentionally designed for just one encounter.
Online, self-help SSIs are also available, which can be tried anywhere, anytime. If you participate in the evaluation study, you can get paid for participation. The programs include both self-guided SSIs (available 24/7) and provider-delivered options. Click here to schedule an appointment with a provider.

Once you have logged in, you will find all the details of the benefit, including using the app if you don’t have a Peloton bike for fitness classes like Yoga, Cardio and Strength Training. You will also find a FAQ section, including questions about how to access this program if you already have a Peloton membership.
Simple Self Care
- When you’re washing your hands, take the 20 seconds to think of three things you are grateful for.
- Keep a water bottle handy throughout the day to remind you to stay hydrated.
- Set a news and social media daily time limit.
- Take regular short 2-3 minute pauses as often as you can during the day.
- Breathe: Take a few deeper breaths than normal – a long slow in breath and a long slow out breath - pay attention to your in-breath, all the way in – and your out-breath, all the way out. Feel a sense of letting go on the out-breath.
- Ground yourself: Feel your feet on the ground – notice any sensations like tingling or heat or cold. Paying attention to your feet takes your attention away from thoughts and difficult emotions.
- At the end of your shift, take five minutes to unwind. This “buffer time” helps you release stress that’s built up from the shift.
- Protect your time off; avoid stacking shifts if possible. Down time is crucial mentally and physically.
If you are using these suggested self-care methods and you still feel overwhelmed, it means that you are human. Consider reaching out to a friend, loved one, or mental health professional.
